Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has informed the exchanges about a Central Government notification (Gazette Notification dated 07.04.2025) for the amalgamation of two Regional Rural Banks. Odisha Gramya Bank, currently sponsored by IOB, will merge with Utkal Grameen Bank, sponsored by State Bank of India, to form a single entity called 'Odisha Grameen Bank'. The new RRB will have its head office at Bhubaneswar and IOB will continue as its sponsor bank. The effective date of the amalgamation is 01.05.2025. This is part of the government's broader initiative to consolidate RRBs across multiple states, with similar notifications issued for Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat RRBs. All employees, assets, liabilities, and contracts of the transferor RRBs will vest in the new entity from the effective date.
This is a government-directed consolidation of Regional Rural Banks where IOB acts as a sponsor bank. It has no direct material impact on IOB's financials, as RRBs are separate entities. IOB retains its rural banking presence in Odisha, and the merger may improve operational efficiency of the sponsored RRB, which is a mildly positive structural development.
