CRISIL Ratings has upgraded Shriram Finance's long-term rating from 'AA+' to 'AAA' (stable outlook), the highest rating tier. The upgrade follows MUFG Bank's Rs 39,618 crore investment for a 20% stake, completed on April 8, 2026, which strengthened the company's networth to over Rs 1 lakh crore and reduced leverage from 4.1x to ~2.5x. The short-term rating 'A1+' was reaffirmed. Ratings were also removed from 'Watch with Positive Implications'. Additionally, ratings on Rs 1,280 crore of debt instruments (NCDs, market-linked debentures, and subordinated debt) were withdrawn upon redemption.
This is a significant positive development for shareholders. The top-notch AAA rating signals very low credit risk and should lower the company's borrowing costs, improve access to capital markets, and potentially boost investor confidence in the stock.
