S&P Global Ratings has upgraded SBI's issuer credit rating to 'BBB/Stable/A-2' from 'BBB-/Positive/A-3'. The bank's standalone credit profile (SACP) also moved up to 'bbb+' from 'bbb', and its 'Capital and Earnings' assessment improved from 'Moderate (-1)' to 'Adequate (0)'. The upgrade follows a similar action on India's sovereign rating and reflects SBI's improving capital position, supported by a INR 250 billion capital infusion in July 2025. S&P expects SBI's risk-adjusted capital ratio to rise to 7.0%-7.5% over the next 24 months from 5.9% as of March 2024, with return on assets steady at 0.9%-1.0%. The outlook is stable, and S&P sees a very high likelihood of government support for the bank in times of stress.
This is a positive signal for SBI shareholders, as a higher credit rating lowers borrowing costs and signals stronger financial health. However, the rating remains capped by India's sovereign rating, so any further upgrade would depend on a sovereign upgrade. The stable outlook suggests no immediate rating changes are expected.
