Grasim Industries has received a favorable order from the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on 5th May 2026. The NCLAT has set aside the Competition Commission of India's (CCI) order dated 16th March 2020, which had imposed a penalty of INR 301.61 crore on the Company related to its Viscose Staple Fibre (VSF) Business. The NCLAT has remanded the matter back to the CCI for fresh hearing and consideration. The Company had previously filed an appeal against the CCI order and obtained a stay. No provision for this penalty had been created in the books of account. Certain behavioural directions that were imposed earlier have also been set aside.
This is a positive development for Grasim as the INR 301.61 crore penalty has been vacated for now, though the matter is remanded for a fresh CCI hearing, meaning potential liability could resurface depending on the outcome of the re-evaluation.
