Earnings Call / Concall

An earnings call (concall) is the conference management hosts after results, where executives explain the quarter, share outlook and take analyst questions. In India, listed companies must file the call's recording and transcript with the stock exchanges.

The filed results give you the numbers; the concall gives you the why. Management walks through demand trends, margin drivers, capex and the outlook — then the Q&A begins, which is usually the most revealing part: analysts probe the weak spots, and evasive or defensive answers can say more than the prepared remarks.

SEBI's disclosure rules require calls to be intimated in advance and their recordings and transcripts filed with the exchanges shortly after, so the full record is public even if you missed the call live. Transcripts often run 15–25 pages, which is why condensed summaries — increasingly AI-generated — have become the practical way most investors consume them.

Listen across quarters, not just within one: is the tone getting more confident or more cautious, are the same growth promises being repeated without delivery, has the story changed? A single call informs; a sequence of calls reveals.

How stocks tend to react

Stocks can move on concall commentary independently of the results themselves — a cautious outlook on a good quarter, or a convincing turnaround plan on a bad one, frequently drives the next day's move.

MarketPing measures this instead of guessing: every analysed announcement carries the stock's actual price reaction across 14 horizons, and the Reaction Lab aggregates how each category of announcement has historically moved stocks.
