IDBI Bank stake sale: Will Fairfax’s entry benefit minority shareholders? What investors should know
Awaiting price reaction for this filing.
The CCEA approved Fairfax Financial Holdings' acquisition of a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank for ₹52,877 crore (₹81 per share), covering the government's 30.48% and LIC's 30.24% holdings. Post-transaction, the government will retain 15% and LIC 19%, holding a combined 34% with no board seats, to be divested over coming years. IDBI Bank shares closed at ₹90.39 on 14 October, up about 9% and roughly 12% above the acquisition price, making the open offer a floor rather than a premium for retail holders. The deal, requiring RBI and SEBI clearances, covers approximately two-thirds of the FY27 disinvestment target of ₹80,000 crore. Fairfax, which also owns 40% of CSB Bank, may get up to 24 months to merge or exit CSB Bank under RBI norms on dual bank ownership.
