Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) has signed a Rupee Term Loan agreement worth up to Rs 12,842 crore with Hindustan Urvarak and Rasayan Limited (HURL) to refinance HURL's existing long-term debt. This is described as one of IRFC's largest refinancing transactions and is part of its IRFC 2.0 strategy under a whole-of-government financing approach. HURL is a joint venture of major PSUs (NTPC, Coal India, Indian Oil, FCIL and HFCL) that operates urea plants at Gorakhpur, Sindri and Barauni. The deal expands IRFC's footprint beyond rail financing into fertilizer and other infrastructure sectors with rail linkages. IRFC highlights that it maintains a zero-NPA portfolio, and the refinancing is expected to give HURL better repayment terms aligned with its cash flows.
For IRFC shareholders, this demonstrates business diversification and growth in non-railway infrastructure lending, which could support future loan book expansion. The large ticket size reinforces IRFC's positioning as a major infrastructure financier, though the actual impact on earnings will depend on the spread earned on this loan.
