Akzo Nobel India received an order from the Karnataka GST Department on 1 January 2026 in relation to a Show Cause Notice issued on 27 June 2025 for the April 2018–March 2019 period. The original demand was Rs. 17.66 crore (tax, interest and penalty of roughly Rs. 5.65 cr each). After the company submitted its response, the Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Taxes issued an order reducing the total demand dramatically to Rs. 41.57 lakh (tax Rs. 12.9 lakh, interest Rs. 15.77 lakh, penalty Rs. 12.9 lakh). This is a reduction of nearly 97.6% from the original claim. The order is still open for further submissions, and the company is in the process of responding within the prescribed timeframe.
This is a materially favourable outcome for shareholders, as the potential GST liability has shrunk from Rs. 17.66 crore to around Rs. 0.42 crore. The remaining amount is small relative to the company's size and may be further contested, limiting any meaningful financial hit.
