Akzo Nobel India has shared an update on an ongoing GST dispute with the Tamil Nadu tax department. Originally, on December 31, 2023, the department raised a demand of about ₹6.17 crore for the years 2017-2020, saying the company had wrongly claimed input tax credit. The company appealed this order. On August 6, 2025, the Commissioner (Appeals-1) in Chennai issued a revised order cutting the demand down to roughly ₹2.60 crore (tax of ₹2.37 crore, interest, and penalty of ₹22.5 lakh). The company has not accepted this and is preparing a further response within the allowed time. The matter is still open and may move to a higher appellate authority.
Shareholders get partial relief since the original demand has been reduced by nearly 58%, lowering the worst-case financial hit. However, ₹2.6 crore is still at stake and the final outcome is uncertain, so this is not a clean win and may keep a small overhang on the stock until resolved.
