Kalpataru Projects International's wholly owned subsidiary, Wainganga Expressway Private Limited (WEPL), issued a Termination Notice to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on 15th July 2025, effectively ending their Concession Agreement. This follows a back-and-forth dispute where NHAI first served an intention to terminate on WEPL claiming around INR 351.46 Cr in unpaid premiums, which WEPL disputed. Earlier, on 31st July 2024, an arbitral tribunal had ruled in WEPL's favour on similar issues, and NHAI had challenged that award. The company, relying on legal advice, believes WEPL has a favourable legal position and that this termination will not have significant financial implications on Kalpataru.
The termination closes out a long-running dispute over an expressway project. The company is signalling minimal financial damage and expects a smooth transfer of the project. Short-term stock reaction may be muted, but investors should watch for the final settlement amount, as the outcome of the prior favourable arbitration award could still result in money owed to WEPL by NHAI.
