MTNL has reported ongoing defaults on bank loan repayments to seven lenders, including SBI, PNB, Bank of India, and Union Bank of India. The company has overdue principal of Rs 7,794.34 crore and overdue interest of Rs 714.64 crore, against a total bank loan of Rs 8,509 crore. NPA (non-performing asset) status was classified by banks between August 2024 and February 2025. This is the 13th consecutive monthly disclosure of the same defaults. MTNL's total financial indebtedness stands at Rs 34,335 crore, including bank loans, sovereign guarantee bonds, and a loan from DoT.
This signals deep and continuing financial distress for the government-owned telco, with the vast majority of its bank debt now in default. Shareholders should expect continued pressure on the stock, possible further credit rating downgrades, and uncertainty around debt restructuring or government support.
