MTNL has informed stock exchanges that it could not deposit adequate funds into the escrow account maintained with Bank of India for the 6th semi-annual interest payment on its 7.75% MTNL Bond Series VII E (INE153A08147), due on 24 March 2026. The funding was required to be done 10 days before the due date as per the Tri-Partite Agreement between MTNL, the Department of Telecommunications, and the Debenture Trustee. MTNL attributed the failure to insufficient funds. However, the company clarified that all its bonds carry a Sovereign Guarantee from the Government of India, meaning the Debenture Trustee can invoke the guarantee and the government is obligated to step in and make the payment to bondholders in case of default.
This is a negative signal on MTNL's financial health, as the state-run telecom operator is unable to service its own debt obligations on time. While the sovereign guarantee provides a safety net for bondholders and limits the risk of an actual default to investors, it highlights MTNL's worsening liquidity situation and dependence on government support. Shareholders should expect continued pressure on the stock and potentially more such disclosures going forward.
