Maruti Suzuki's wholly-owned subsidiary Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG) received an Appellate Order from the Gujarat CGST Authority on 1st August 2025. The Commissioner (Appeals) upheld a tax demand of Rs. 861 million for the period April 2020 to August 2022 related to tax liability under reverse charge on certain services. The subsidiary had already paid this Rs. 861 million amount even before the Show Cause Notice was issued. The order also upheld interest and imposed a penalty of Rs. 86 million. Separately, partial withdrawal of appeal was allowed for July 2017 to March 2020 under Section 128A so that an Amnesty application can be considered for that earlier period. SMG will now file a further appeal before the Tribunal.
The financial impact is limited because the disputed tax amount was already paid in advance, and the additional Rs. 86 million penalty is small relative to Maruti Suzuki's overall size. Shares are unlikely to react meaningfully as the company has confirmed no major impact on operations or financials.
