Vedanta Limited has received an order from the Office of the Principal Commissioner of Central Tax, Visakhapatnam, confirming a penalty of approximately INR 145.95 crore along with demand and interest. This relates to non-payment or delayed payment of Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) for an oil & gas block where Vedanta is the operator, covering the period from July 2022 to March 2024. The bulk of the amount (around INR 115 crore) pertains to Videocon's share, and Vedanta's own share of the penalty is only INR 6.96 crore (22.5% of INR 30.94 crore). The order was issued on April 30, 2025 and received by the company on May 15, 2025. The company is currently evaluating its next course of action, which may include appeal.
The direct financial impact on Vedanta is limited to around INR 6.96 crore in penalty, as most of the liability relates to its partner Videocon's share. However, the additional demand and interest could push the total outflow higher, and any adverse outcome from the company's intended challenge could affect cash flows and operational costs at the affected oil & gas block.
