CARE Ratings has upgraded PNB Housing Finance's long-term credit rating from AA+ to AAA (Stable outlook), the highest rating level. This upgrade applies to bank facilities worth ₹32,000 crore, bonds worth ₹2,500 crore, non-convertible debentures worth ₹5,206 crore, tier II bonds worth ₹39.70 crore, and fixed deposits worth ₹25,000 crore. Short-term ratings on commercial paper were reaffirmed at CARE A1+. The upgrade reflects strong promoter support from Punjab National Bank (which holds 27.75% stake and has committed need-based unconditional support), the company's position as India's third-largest housing finance company with ₹90,921 crore AUM, improving asset quality with GNPA declining from 8.1% in FY22 to 0.9% in FY26, and comfortable capitalisation with 27.26% CAR. CARE notes that the company's affordable housing segment book of ₹8,153 crore (launched in FY23) is still unseasoned and its performance as it seasons will remain a key monitorable.
This AAA rating upgrade signals very low credit risk and could improve the company's ability to raise funds at competitive rates. For shareholders, it reflects strengthening financial health and lower default risk, which is positive for the stock.
