The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Mumbai bench, on August 18, 2025, admitted an insolvency petition under Section 7 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code filed by State Bank of India against SU Toll Road Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure. SBI is seeking to recover a default of INR 358.70 crore (including interest of about INR 74.47 crore) on term loans originally sanctioned by L&T Infrastructure Finance and later assigned to a consortium of lenders led by SBI. SU Toll Road operates a road project on the Salem-Ulundurpet stretch of NH-68 in Tamil Nadu under a BOT concession valid until January 14, 2033. The subsidiary had earlier tried to defer or dismiss the petition, but both NCLT (June 20, 2025) and NCLAT (July 8, 2025) rejected its plea. Reliance Infrastructure has clarified that its entire exposure to the subsidiary has already been fully provided for in its books and that no further financial impact is expected.
This is a negative event for Reliance Infrastructure's subsidiary, but the company has stated that its full exposure is already provisioned, so no further P&L hit is expected. However, the admission of CIRP against a subsidiary could affect investor sentiment and raise concerns about governance and pending group-level stress, even though Reliance Infrastructure itself is not the corporate debtor in this case.
