The Supreme Court of India has ruled in favour of Shree Digvijay Cement, dismissing an appeal filed by the Commissioner of Central Excise and Service Tax. The original dispute dated back to 2011, when the tax department had raised a demand of ₹22.80 crore (including penalty) over cement supplied to institutional and industrial buyers in packaged form without printed MRP during December 2008 to June 2010. CESTAT had already ruled in the company's favour in June 2019, and the tax department's subsequent appeal has now been thrown out by the Supreme Court on April 29, 2025. The company has confirmed no violation was committed on its part. This brings finality to a 14-year-old tax dispute that was hanging over the company.
Positive for shareholders — the company has been fully relieved of a potential ₹22.80 crore tax liability, removing a long-pending overhang and strengthening its financial position.
