Tata Steel had received a demand notice of around ₹190.27 crore from the Office of Deputy Director of Mines, Jajpur, related to an alleged shortfall in mineral dispatch from its Sukinda Chromite Block for the fourth contract year (July 2023–July 2024) under the MCR 2016 rules. The company had filed a writ petition in the Orissa High Court on August 8, 2025, seeking to quash the demand. The High Court has now tagged Tata Steel's petition with other similar pending writ petitions and listed the matter for hearing on September 2, 2025. Importantly, the court has restrained the authorities from taking any coercive action against the company until the next hearing date.
Short-term positive: the interim stay on coercive action protects Tata Steel from immediate recovery or asset attachment over the ~₹190 crore demand. However, the underlying liability is not yet resolved, and an adverse final ruling could still hit earnings, so the issue remains a material overhang.
