Tata Steel received a CGST demand cum show cause notice for ₹890.52 crore in allegedly irregular Input Tax Credit availed during FY2018-19 to FY2020-21. The Adjudicating Authority confirmed the demand along with an equivalent penalty of ₹890.52 crore plus interest on 26 December 2025. The Company disputes the demand, arguing the credit difference was due to permissible year-end adjustments and that the notice suffered from jurisdictional and limitation defects. After the Jharkhand High Court disposed of the Company's Writ Petition (23 April 2026) granting liberty to approach the Appellate Authority, Tata Steel escalated the matter by filing a Special Leave Petition before the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. On 19 May 2026, the Supreme Court issued notice to the respondents and granted a stay on all further proceedings until the next hearing.
The stay from the Supreme Court temporarily halts recovery proceedings, reducing immediate financial risk. However, the ₹890.52 crore tax demand plus equal penalty remains pending, and a final adverse ruling could significantly impact the Company's financials.
