Tata Steel received a favourable order from the Joint Commissioner of CGST and Central Excise, Jamshedpur dated Dec 17, 2025. This relates to a June 2025 Show Cause Notice over input tax credit of compensation cess of about Rs 161.5 crore allegedly irregularly claimed by erstwhile Tata Steel Long Products Limited, which has since merged with Tata Steel. The entire tax demand of Rs 161.5 crore has been set aside. Of this, Rs 160.3 crore already paid via GST returns stands appropriated, and the balance demand of Rs 1.23 crore was dropped. No penalty has been imposed on the company.
Favourable ruling removes a major tax overhang. Positive for sentiment; no fresh financial outflow from the dropped demand.
