Ugar Sugar Works reported Q1 FY26 revenue from operations of Rs. 36,388.11 lakhs, up about 5.5% from Rs. 34,494.69 lakhs in Q1 FY25. However, the company posted a loss before tax of Rs. 1,410.65 lakhs and a loss after tax of Rs. 1,373.29 lakhs, both wider than the year-ago losses of Rs. 1,102.36 lakhs and Rs. 1,182.81 lakhs respectively. Loss per share stood at Rs. 1.22 versus Rs. 1.05 in the same quarter last year. Segment-wise, the sugar business swung from a small profit last year to a Rs. 274.49 lakh loss, while industrial alcohol remained the strongest segment with a profit of Rs. 1,749.81 lakhs. The auditor (Kirtane & Pandit LLP) issued an unmodified review report with no qualifications. The company noted that its business is seasonal, so Q1 figures are not indicative of full-year performance.
Higher revenue failed to translate into profits, with losses widening year-on-year, which is a negative signal for shareholders. However, since sugar operations are seasonal and industrial alcohol continues to perform well, investors should wait for the full-year picture before drawing firm conclusions.
