Moody's has upgraded Yes Bank's long-term foreign currency issuer rating from Ba3 to Ba2, and its long-term deposit rating from Ba3 to Ba2. The Baseline Credit Assessment was also upgraded from B1 to Ba3, and the senior unsecured medium-term note program rating moved from (P)Ba3 to (P)Ba2. However, the outlook was revised from positive to stable. The upgrade reflects improvement in the bank's credit profile, capital buffers, and loan loss reserves, with gross NPL ratio falling to 1.6% in March 2025 from 13.9% in March 2022 and CET1 capital ratio rising to 13.5% from 12.2%. Moody's also noted the planned 20% stake acquisition by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) as credit positive, though it will not factor in affiliate support post-transaction.
This is a positive development that signals improving financial health and asset quality, which could boost investor confidence and support the stock price. However, the downgrade of outlook from positive to stable suggests Moody's sees the current rating level as appropriately calibrated for now, possibly tempering expectations for further near-term upgrades.
