Dividend (Interim & Final)

A dividend is a cash distribution of profits to shareholders, declared as an amount per share (often expressed as a percentage of face value in India). An interim dividend is declared by the board during the year and paid quickly; a final dividend is recommended by the board but paid only after shareholders approve it at the AGM.

Eligibility runs on the record date: you must hold the shares before the ex-date to receive the payout. Interim dividends must be paid within 30 days of declaration; final dividends are paid within 30 days of the AGM approving them. Companies with formal dividend-distribution policies (required for larger listed companies) publish the framework governing how much profit they aim to return.

Since April 2020, dividends are taxed in the shareholder's hands at slab rates — the old dividend distribution tax is gone. Companies deduct TDS at 10% once payouts to you cross ₹10,000 in a financial year (threshold raised in Budget 2025), which you claim as credit in your return.

For analysis, look at the payout ratio (dividend as a share of profit) and its consistency rather than the headline percentage — a '300% dividend' on a ₹1 face value is just ₹3 per share. A stable or rising payout from growing profits is the healthy pattern; a high payout from flat or borrowed funds is not.

How stocks tend to react

Ordinary dividends in line with a company's history usually move the stock little — they are expected. Surprises matter more: a special dividend or a sharp hike tends to be read as confidence, while a cut or omission from a habitual payer is often taken as a warning about cash flows. The stock also adjusts downward by roughly the dividend amount on the ex-date, which is mechanics rather than sentiment.

MarketPing measures this instead of guessing: every analysed announcement carries the stock's actual price reaction across 14 horizons, and the Reaction Lab aggregates how each category of announcement has historically moved stocks.
