FII / FPI

FPIs (Foreign Portfolio Investors) are SEBI-registered foreign funds and institutions that invest in Indian stocks and bonds; FII (Foreign Institutional Investor) is the older name for the same investor class, and the two terms are used interchangeably.

Foreign investors must register with SEBI as FPIs to buy Indian securities. The category covers sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, mutual funds, hedge funds and other overseas institutions. India folded the older FII regime into the unified FPI framework in 2014, which is why market commentary still mixes the two labels.

Two data feeds track their activity. The exchanges publish provisional FII buy/sell numbers every evening, and NSDL publishes the official FPI flow data with a breakdown by route. That route split matters: the cash route (secondary-market buying and selling on the exchanges) reflects genuine sentiment about listed stocks, while the primary route (IPO anchor allotments, QIPs and other new-share subscriptions) is lumpy, deal-driven money. A day can show FPIs as net buyers overall purely because of one large IPO subscription even while they sold heavily on the exchanges.

Most platforms quote only the combined number. MarketPing's FPI tracking separates cash-route flows from primary-route flows so the sign of the number matches what actually happened in the market.

How stocks tend to react

Sustained FPI selling through the cash route tends to pressure the broad market and the rupee, with large caps (where FPIs are concentrated) usually hit first; sustained buying does the reverse. Single-day numbers are noisy — trends over weeks carry more signal than any one print.

MarketPing measures this instead of guessing: every analysed announcement carries the stock's actual price reaction across 14 horizons, and the Reaction Lab aggregates how each category of announcement has historically moved stocks.
