Stock Split Calculator
A stock split cuts the face value of each share — from ₹10 to ₹2, say — multiplying your share count by the same factor while the price divides by it. Like a bonus, it changes the denomination, not the value: ₹1 lakh invested stays ₹1 lakh across five times as many shares.
Enter the old and new face values with your holding; the calculator returns the split factor, your new share count, the adjusted price and your adjusted average cost. It handles reverse splits (consolidations) too — just enter a higher new face value.
How it works
- Split factor = old face value ÷ new face value (₹10 → ₹2 is a 5-for-1 split).
- New shares = holding × factor; adjusted price = price ÷ factor; average cost adjusts identically.
- A factor below 1 is a reverse split — shares consolidate and the price multiplies.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a split and a bonus?
Mechanically similar for you, different in accounting: a split reduces the face value of every share (₹10 → ₹2); a bonus issues new ₹10 shares by capitalising reserves, leaving face value unchanged. Both are value-neutral; dividend comparisons matter though — dividends are often declared as % of face value.
Why do companies split shares?
Optics and liquidity: a ₹40,000 share price shuts out small investors and widens bid-ask spreads. Splitting to a few hundred rupees broadens participation. There is no fundamental change — treat 'affordable now' as marketing, not analysis.
Is a stock split a taxable event?
No — no gain is realised. Your per-share cost divides by the split factor, total cost stays the same, and the original purchase date carries over for the holding period (unlike bonus shares, which start fresh at nil cost).
What are the possible face values in India?
Face value must stay a whole rupee (₹1 minimum) — so listed companies move between ₹10, ₹5, ₹2 and ₹1. A company already at ₹1 cannot split further; from ₹10 the maximum single split is 10-for-1.
