Asian Paints has sold its full holding of 20,10,626 equity shares in Akzo Nobel India Limited, representing 4.42% of Akzo Nobel India's paid-up share capital. The transaction was executed on 9th July 2025 at Rs. 3,651 per share through the bulk deal mechanism on the stock exchange. The total value of the sale works out to approximately Rs. 734 crore. This was a passive financial/strategic investment, not a subsidiary or joint venture, and Asian Paints continues to remain the largest decorative paints company in India with no change to its core operations.
The deal will bring in roughly Rs. 734 crore of cash inflows for Asian Paints, which can be deployed towards capacity expansion, debt reduction, or shareholder returns. The exit from Akzo Nobel India (a peer in the paints industry) removes any perception of conflict and streamlines the group's investment portfolio, which is broadly neutral to mildly positive for shareholders.
