Balrampur Chini Mills Limited has shared a press release about a scientific study conducted by a premier government institution under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers. The study found that Polylactic Acid (PLA), a compostable polymer, degrades safely in Indian soil conditions unlike conventional plastics. Over 180 days, PLA microplastics reduced drastically from 287 to just 18 particles per kilogram, showing near-complete natural degradation. Conventional plastics showed almost no reduction over the same period. The study also confirmed no toxic residue from PLA and that earthworms could process it safely. Balrampur Chini Mills is setting up India's first PLA plant with 80,000 TPA capacity, and this study provides scientific validation for the company's bioplastics vertical.
