Bharti Airtel announced a US$1 billion fundraising round for its data center subsidiary Nxtra Data Limited, valuing Nxtra at around US$3.1 billion post-closing. Alpha Wave Global will invest US$435 million, Carlyle US$240 million, Anchorage Capital US$35 million, and Bharti Airtel itself will contribute about US$290 million through its wholly owned subsidiary Airtel Limited. Airtel, which currently holds 75.96% in Nxtra, will retain a controlling stake after the deal. Nxtra plans to use the funds to scale its data center capacity from ~300 MW today to 1 GW in the next few years, targeting around 25% market share, and to expand AI-ready campuses in Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata. The deal is subject to Indian regulatory approvals and is a cash transaction approved by Airtel's Special Committee on March 30, 2026.
This is a value-unlocking move for shareholders — Nxtra gets capital from top global investors at a ~US$3.1 billion valuation while Airtel keeps control, reducing the funding burden on the parent. Nxtra's data center business is one of Airtel's key growth bets tied to India's AI and cloud demand, so successful execution could support the stock's long-term growth narrative, though near-term EPS may see minor dilution from the minority stake sale.
