State Bank of India (SBI) has approved selling its entire 13.19% stake (about 413.44 crore equity shares) in Yes Bank Limited to Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) at Rs.21.50 per share, for a total consideration of approximately Rs.8,888.97 crore. The decision was taken by SBI's Executive Committee of the Central Board on 9th May 2025, subject to all regulatory and statutory approvals for the acquirer. The transaction is expected to be completed within 12 months. The stake contributed Rs.512.12 crore in income and Rs.2,571.87 crore to net worth in the last financial year.
Positive for SBI shareholders as it monetizes a non-core investment at a defined price, boosting capital and earnings through a large one-time gain of nearly Rs.8,889 crore. For Yes Bank, it signals a strong foreign banking major (SMBC) coming in as a major shareholder, which could improve investor sentiment on the stock.
