GAIL's Board has approved a new 600 MW solar project with 550 MWh co-located battery storage in Uttar Pradesh at a cost of INR 3,294.86 crore. The project will be financed through debt and equity, with completion targeted within 15 months of EPC contract award. This represents GAIL's first major solar investment, significantly expanding its current minimal solar capacity of ~29 MW. The project aligns with India's renewable energy push and GAIL's strategy to diversify beyond its core gas transmission business.
This signals GAIL's serious entry into renewable energy, which could positively re-rate the stock as investors see diversification beyond traditional gas business. The large capex will increase debt levels but supports long-term growth in clean energy.
