Medanta's board has approved two major expansion plans. First, the company will set up a 400+ bed multi-specialty hospital in central Varanasi through a build-to-suit and lease deal with Shripal Hospitality LLP, with Medanta's investment estimated at up to Rs. 550 crores for fit-outs, medical equipment, and interiors. The civil structure will be built by the partner on a freehold land parcel, and the hospital is expected to be ready within 4 years. Second, the board approved filing a medical college application directly through the parent company (instead of a Section 8 subsidiary) following revised NMC regulations, with a total project cost of Rs. 322 crores. Both projects will be funded through a mix of internal accruals and debt. The Varanasi hospital will strengthen Medanta's presence in eastern Uttar Pradesh, complementing its existing 950-bed Lucknow and 550-bed Noida hospitals.
This is a significant capacity expansion that adds ~400 beds to Medanta's network, pushing total state capacity in UP to around 1,900 beds. The combined capex commitment of roughly Rs. 870+ crores is sizeable and may pressure near-term debt levels, but supports long-term revenue growth by tapping an underserved market.
