Midwest Limited has been selected as the Lead Consortium Partner by Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd (KMML), a Government of Kerala undertaking, for a strategic rare earth elements pilot project. The project involves setting up a pilot plant for processing monazite-rich tailings to produce rare earth mixed compounds and downstream separation of individual REEs. Midwest will invest 100% of the capital, with the pilot facility to be commissioned within 6 months of receiving regulatory approvals. KMML will provide up to 50 MT of monazite tailings, 2 acres of free land on lease, and facilitate statutory clearances. Upon successful pilot, KMML's commercial production through a joint venture will give Midwest the Right of First Refusal. This is one of the first state-private sector collaborations in India's rare earth domain, supporting the nation's self-reliance in critical minerals.
This partnership marks Midwest's strategic entry into India's rare earth ecosystem, leveraging its existing heavy mineral sands activities in Sri Lanka. The government collaboration enhances credibility and positions the company to benefit from India's push for critical mineral self-reliance. While the pilot project's financial details are not disclosed, successful commercialization could provide significant long-term revenue opportunities through the Right of First Refusal on joint venture production.
