Vedanta Limited informed stock exchanges that its subsidiary Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) has received board approval for a Rs. 12,000 crore capital expenditure plan. The project involves setting up a new 250 KT (kilotonnes per annum) integrated zinc smelter at Debari, along with matching expansion of mining and milling capacities across HZL's mines. This is the first phase of HZL's 2X growth plan aimed at doubling its zinc, lead, and silver capacity over the long term. Post-expansion, HZL's total refined metal capacity will rise from 1,129 Ktpa to 1,379 Ktpa, and mined metal capacity will increase from 1,180 Kt to 1,510 Kt. The project targets completion within 36 months and will be executed on an end-to-end outsourced EPC basis. An investor call was scheduled on June 17, 2025 at 4:00 PM IST to discuss the 2X growth plan in detail.
Positive signal for Vedanta shareholders — HZL is Vedanta's most valuable listed subsidiary and this large expansion targets India's rising zinc demand driven by steel and infrastructure growth. The Rs. 12,000 crore outlay is significant and may pressure HZL's near-term free cash flows and leverage, but supports long-term earnings growth and value creation.
