Shyam Metalics step-down subsidiary SMEL Steel Structural has started commercial production at its new Sambalpur aluminium foil plant on 16 July 2026. The premium foil line makes foils of 6 to 40 microns thickness with 18,000 tonnes per annum capacity. Total Sambalpur downstream investment is about Rs 800 Crores, also covering an upcoming FRP (flat rolled) line of 60,000 TPA targeted for September 2026. The company expects 40 to 50 percent improvement in product margins and around 2x to 2.5x revenue growth in this segment, reducing import dependence for packaging and industrial foils.
Adds high-margin downstream capacity, lifts segment revenue 2 to 2.5 times and operating margins 40 to 50 percent. Positive for long-term growth and import substitution.
