Moody's has affirmed State Bank of India's long-term deposit rating at Baa3 with a stable outlook, while upgrading its standalone Baseline Credit Assessment (BCA) from ba1 to baa3. The AT1 securities rating was also upgraded from (P)B1 to (P)Ba3. The upgrade reflects SBI's improving capital position, with CET1 ratio rising to 11.1% in March 2025 from 10.3% in March 2022, supported by internal accruals and plans to raise fresh equity. Asset quality also strengthened, with gross NPIs falling to 1.8% from 2.2% year-on-year, better than the industry average of 2.3%. Moody's also revised SBI's governance score to G-2 from G-3, citing a more prudent financial strategy.
This is a positive signal for SBI shareholders and bondholders. The upgrade signals stronger standalone credit quality and improved governance, which can help lower SBI's future borrowing costs and boost investor confidence. Deposit ratings were already aligned with India's sovereign rating, so further upgrade is unlikely unless the country rating moves up.
