Sterlite Technologies (STLTECH), in collaboration with C-DOT (Centre for Development of Telematics, under the Department of Telecommunications), has demonstrated India's first Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) transmission over 100 km using 4-core Multi-Core Fibre (MCF). In the test, the quantum signal travelled through one fibre core while high-speed classical data was simultaneously carried through the other three cores, achieving a stable, error-free link. The MCF cable was deployed at the DoT-sponsored Advanced Optical Communications Test Bed at IIT-Madras, complying with TEC standards. STL claims it is the first company globally to deploy MCF cables in both underground and aerial network infrastructure. The breakthrough is positioned as supporting India's 5G/6G rollout and future quantum-secure communication needs.
This is a technology milestone and brand-building achievement rather than an immediate revenue trigger — no order value, contract size, or financial figures were disclosed. For shareholders, it signals STL's R&D capabilities and positions the company in the emerging quantum-secure communications space, which could attract future government and enterprise opportunities.
