Sun Pharma has appointed Kirti Ganorkar, currently heading the India business since 2019, as the new Managing Director effective September 1, 2025, for a five-year term, subject to shareholder approval. Dilip Shanghvi, the founder, steps aside from the MD role to become Executive Chairman, focusing on the specialty portfolio and long-term strategy. Separately, Abhay Gandhi, President & CEO of North America, is leaving the company to pursue outside interests, and will be replaced by Rick Ascroft, a former Takeda Pharmaceuticals executive with over 30 years of experience. Aalok Shanghvi, Whole-time Director and COO, will additionally oversee the North America business. The changes are part of a planned succession process with Kirti Ganorkar being a long-tenured internal candidate who joined Sun Pharma in 1996.
This is a structured leadership succession with continuity at the top — founder Dilip Shanghvi remains as Executive Chairman, ensuring strategic stability, while an internal appointee takes over daily operations. The exit of the North America CEO and external replacement may cause short-term uncertainty, but the overall transition appears orderly and well-planned, generally viewed positively by investors.
