Tata Power has completed the first tranche of its planned acquisition of a 40% equity stake in Dorjilung Hydro Power Limited (DHPL), a Special Purpose Vehicle in Bhutan. The company invested ₹50 crore in this tranche, subscribing to 50 lakh equity shares of ₹100 each. The total investment is expected to be around ₹1,572 crore, to be deployed over the next six years. DHPL is developing a 1,125 MW hydro power project in Bhutan with a total project cost of approximately ₹13,100 crore. DHPL was incorporated on December 8, 2025, has no turnover yet, and will become an associate company of Tata Power post-acquisition. The project supports Tata Power's clean and green energy transition goals.
This is a positive development for Tata Power as it expands its renewable energy portfolio with a large-scale hydro project, aligning with its green energy transition strategy. The phased ₹1,572 crore investment spread over six years limits near-term cash outflows, but the massive 1,125 MW project adds significant long-term clean energy capacity, which could support future valuation upside.
