Wockhardt announced that a leading UK medical journal (Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy) published a case report on the successful use of its novel antibiotic Zaynich® (Zidebactam/Cefepime) in treating a critically ill US liver transplant patient suffering from a pan-drug resistant infection. The patient was infected with two pathogens (Pseudomonas and Klebsiella) resistant to all recently introduced antibiotics, and had failed 10 weeks of prior treatment. After 14 days of Zaynich® around the transplant, the patient improved within 11 days and remained infection-free six weeks later. The case was co-authored by clinicians from Houston Methodist, Weill Cornell, and Johns Hopkins. Zaynich® has completed a global Phase III trial (supporting future marketing approval) and over 50 patients have been treated under compassionate use in India and the US.
Positive publicity and validation for Wockhardt's antibiotic pipeline from a prestigious peer-reviewed publication, which could support future marketing authorization and global uptake of Zaynich®. However, this is a compassionate use case report and not a regulatory approval, so near-term revenue impact may be limited until formal approvals are secured.
