Each move is the index's closing value against the previous day's close (index values only, dividends not included). It counts past days and says nothing about the next one.

How it is measured

Each day's move is the Nifty 50's official closing value divided by the previous trading day's close, minus one, for every trading day from 4 Jan 2000 to 6 Oct 2026 (6,653 days). Days are grouped by the size of the move: under 1%, 1% to 2%, 2% to 3%, and 3% or more, on the side of a fall or a rise; a move of exactly 1%, 2% or 3% counts in the higher group. 7 days closed exactly where the day before closed: they are drawn on the centre line as "no change", counted in the 4,498 days that moved less than 1%, and counted as neither a fall nor a rise. Index values only: dividends are not included.

This counts what happened on past days and says nothing about any future day.
