What the chart shows

Which new business trend has the most listed companies already working in it? Electric vehicles: 73 of the 3,052 companies whose annual report MarketPing's AI read, 10 more than railways and defence.

Companies that make, sell or run something in each trend

1. Electric vehicles73
2. Railways63
3. Defence63
4. Solar power59
5. Online shopping45
6. Wind power42
7. Batteries36
8. Electronics making31
9. Cyber security25
10. Biotech medicines23
11. Drones18
12. Space15
13. Data centres14
14. Green hydrogen fuel12
15. Computer chips11

For only 5 of the 73 are electric vehicles the main business; for the other 68 it is a smaller part of what they do.

AI is left out on purpose. 149 companies make, sell or use AI, but that count also takes in companies that only use it in their own work, like a chatbot for customers. The other trends count only companies that make, sell or run something in them.

What counts: the trend is one of the company's main businesses, or a smaller business with real work or sales today, in the company's own annual report, checked twice by MarketPing's AI. What does not: plans with no sales yet, or a passing mention. A company can be in more than one trend, so the counts do not add up (390 different companies in all). This counts companies, not their size, and is not a list of shares to buy.

How it is measured

MarketPing's AI read the opening pages (up to 36: the overview, the chairman's letter, the highlights) of the latest annual report we hold for each company, and noted which of 16 new business trends the company works in. It did not read the whole report. It puts each company at one of four levels, always the lowest the words support: the trend is one of the main businesses; a smaller business with real work or sales today; plans, orders or spending with little or no sales yet; or only a mention (outlook, hopes, industry talk).

Every placement rests on a quote matched word for word to its page. A bar counts the first two levels only: the company already makes, sells or runs something in the trend. Those two levels were checked a second time by a separate AI read of the quoted words alone, and the stricter answer wins; 1 claim whose second check could not run is not counted.

Plans and mentions are not counted. The trends follow the definitions MarketPing's AI is given: railways means supplying trains, tracks, signals or rail projects; defence means supplying the armed forces; solar and wind power mean making the equipment or selling the power, not panels on a company's own roof; online shopping includes companies that make a real part of their sales through shopping apps; electric vehicles include makers of parts and chargers. AI is left out of the ranking because its definition also counts a company that only uses it in its own work (a bank's chatbot, cameras in a factory), and no other trend counts that; 149 companies make, sell or use AI. Population: 3,052 listed companies whose report was read 10 Aug to 7 Oct 2026; the biggest companies were read first. 6 more reports could not be read, and 46 companies no longer listed are left out.

A company can be in more than one trend, so the bars do not add up: 390 different companies are in at least one of the 15 ranked trends. A company missing from a bar may still work in the trend if its report's opening pages do not say so. This counts companies, not their size or sales, and names none.

It is not a list of shares to buy.
