What this company actually does
Read out of the prospectus’s business section, stripped of its marketing language.
Molbio Diagnostics makes a portable, battery-operated PCR-based point-of-care diagnostic platform called 'Truenat' that can test for 30 infectious and non-communicable diseases (TB, COVID, Hepatitis B/C, HIV, HPV, etc.) in resource-limited settings, delivering results in about 60 minutes. Through subsidiaries Prognosys and OptraScan, it also offers radiology (X-ray) and digital pathology products, and collaborates with UE Lifesciences for breast-health screening. Products are sold globally to public health programs, diagnostic labs, and hospitals.
How it earns
Sells Truenat devices (one-time hardware) and proprietary Truenat test kits (recurring consumables) — the devices form a closed system that only works with Molbio's own test kits, locking in repeat test-kit revenue from an installed base of 12,500+ devices across 90+ countries.
Who buys
Public health programs, diagnostic laboratories, and public/private hospitals. Heavily concentrated on government and international aid agencies: 84.56% of FY26 revenue from sale of finished goods came from Indian central/state governments and international aid agencies (FY25: 87.83%, FY24: 91.60%). Top 10 customers accounted for 83.26% of FY26 finished-goods revenue (FY25: 83.62%, FY24: 78.54%). A named buyer: Government of India under the TB Programme (1,512-device order in 2020).
Scale
6 manufacturing facilities in India (2 in Goa, 1 in Bengaluru, 1 in Visakhapatnam operated by the Company; 1 in Bengaluru by Prognosys; 1 in Pune by OptraScan India); installed capacity of 5,400 devices and 39,000,000 Truenat test kits per annum; 1,225 permanent employees (of which 153 in R&D); 12,500+ devices sold across 90+ countries as of March 31, 2026; FY26 revenue from operations ₹14,456.87 million ≈ ₹1,445.69 crore (text source figures in ₹ million; 1 crore = 10 million).
What it says sets it apart
- Truenat TB test chip is the only Indian-made chip and one of only two rapid molecular tests in the world endorsed by the WHO for initial TB diagnosis and rifampicin-resistance detection.
- Platform took 13 years of R&D to obtain ICMR certification, creating a high entry barrier in what the company describes as an oligopolistic molecular diagnostics market.
- Closed-system business model: Truenat devices only work with Molbio's own Truenat test kits, generating recurring consumable revenue from an installed base of 12,500+ devices in 90+ countries.
- Portable, battery-operated, room-temperature-stable kits and ~60-minute turnaround time, versus 2–7 days for centralized PCR machines, enabling use in settings without reliable electricity or lab infrastructure.
- Significant R&D investment: 153 R&D staff (136 scientists) and ₹874.56 million spent on R&D in FY26 (6.05% of revenue), with 16 patents in India and 191 foreign patents granted, and Truenat patented in more than 100 countries.
