The Central Government, via a Gazette Notification dated 7 April 2025, has ordered the amalgamation of four Regional Rural Banks — Chaitanya Godavari Grameena Bank, Andhra Pragathi Grameena Bank, Saptagiri Grameena Bank and Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank — into a single RRB called Andhra Pradesh Grameena Bank, to be sponsored by Union Bank of India. As a result, Saptagiri Grameena Bank, currently sponsored by Indian Bank, will be merged into the new entity effective 1 May 2025. Indian Bank will no longer be the sponsor of the amalgamated RRB. This is a government-driven consolidation under the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976, and is part of the broader RRB rationalisation exercise.
This is a routine, government-mandated consolidation of regional rural banks and is unlikely to have any meaningful financial impact on Indian Bank's standalone business or stock price. Indian Bank simply loses sponsorship of one RRB, with no cash, share-swap, or capital implications disclosed.
