Union Bank of India has informed the stock exchanges that Chaitanya Godavari Grameena Bank, which it sponsors, will be merged into a single entity called Andhra Pradesh Grameena Bank effective May 1, 2025. This new entity will also absorb three other regional rural banks — Andhra Pragathi Grameena Bank (sponsored by Canara Bank), Saptagiri Grameena Bank (sponsored by Indian Bank), and Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank (sponsored by SBI). The amalgamation was notified by the Central Government through a Gazette Notification dated April 7, 2025, under Section 23A of the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976. Union Bank of India will continue as the sponsor bank of the merged Andhra Pradesh Grameena Bank.
This is a government-driven consolidation of regional rural banks and is unlikely to have a material impact on Union Bank of India's standalone financials or shareholder value. It mainly streamlines Union Bank's sponsored RRB portfolio in Andhra Pradesh into a single larger entity, which may improve operational efficiency in rural banking.
