What the chart shows

Nearly half of company results calls now mention artificial intelligence (AI): 45 in 100 on the calls about Apr-Jun 2026 results, up from 26 in 100 on Jan-Mar 2024 results, for the same 223 companies.

A results call is the call a company holds with investors after each quarter's results. We followed the same 223 companies through ten quarters; the most was 49 in 100, on Jan-Mar 2026 results.

Jan-Mar 202426 in 100 (59 of 223 calls)
Apr-Jun 202422 in 100 (48 of 223 calls)
Jul-Sep 202424 in 100 (53 of 223 calls)
Oct-Dec 202425 in 100 (55 of 223 calls)
Jan-Mar 202530 in 100 (68 of 223 calls)
Apr-Jun 202532 in 100 (72 of 223 calls)
Jul-Sep 202535 in 100 (79 of 223 calls)
Oct-Dec 202540 in 100 (90 of 223 calls)
Jan-Mar 202649 in 100 (109 of 223 calls)
Apr-Jun 202645 in 100 (101 of 223 calls)

Not just software companies: they mention AI on at least 9 in 10 of their calls every quarter, but without them (20 of the 223) the share still went from 20 to 40 in 100. Counting only calls that said it at least twice, it went from 20 to 34 in 100. Across every results call we hold, not only these companies, it went from 23 to 35 in 100 (611 calls for Apr-Jun 2026; 301 of those 611 calls came from companies with no call the quarter before, which mentioned AI less often, 26 in 100).

What counts: a call counts when its transcript says "AI", "artificial intelligence", "GenAI", "machine learning", "LLM" or "ChatGPT" at least once, from the company or from an analyst's question. "AI" sometimes means something else (an "active ingredient" in crop chemicals, a flight number); those uses are set aside. What it is not: what anyone said about AI, or whether any company uses it well. It is word counting, not a judgement.

How it is measured

We read the transcripts of the calls companies hold with investors after their quarterly results (earnings calls), as filed with the exchanges, for results covering Jan-Mar 2024 to Apr-Jun 2026. The calls we hold grow over time (421 for Jan-Mar 2024 results, 611 for Apr-Jun 2026; 301 of those 611 calls came from companies with no call the quarter before, which mentioned AI less often, 26 in 100), so the chart follows the same 223 companies: those with a results call in all ten quarters, 2,230 calls in all. A call is placed in the quarter its results cover (a call in May about January to March results counts in Jan-Mar).

One-page letters that only link to a transcript are not counted as calls. A call counts as mentioning artificial intelligence (AI) when its transcript says "artificial intelligence", "GenAI", "machine learning", "LLM", "ChatGPT" or "AI" in capitals at least once, whether the company said it or an analyst asked about it. "AI" is also short for other things: an "active ingredient" in crop chemicals, a chemical maker's "advanced intermediates" business, an investment fund (AIF), an Air India flight number. A bare "AI" next to those words, with no technology words near it, is set aside; for crop-chemical and chemical makers, a bare "AI" counts only next to technology words.

When this rule was written (1 Oct 2026) we read randomly drawn pages by hand: 40 of 40 counted mentions were about artificial intelligence, 17 of 20 set-aside mentions were rightly set aside, and all 30 pages that said "artificial" in another sense (sweeteners, "artificially low prices") were rightly left out. Checks: without software companies the share went from 20 to 40 in 100; without banks and lenders, the group with the most AI calls in the latest quarter, from 25 to 43; counting only calls that said it at least twice, from 20 to 34; and across all 4,709 calls from 838 companies, from 23 to 35. This counts whether AI came up, not what was said about it.
