This is the year the company was registered, read from its official company ID number. Some businesses are older than their company, and a new name never changes the year. Only India's biggest listed companies file the report this comes from. Age is a fact, not a view on any company.

How it is measured

Each company's registration year is read from its official company ID number (Corporate Identity Number, characters 9 to 12), taken from its latest yearly sustainability report (BRSR). Only the largest listed companies file one, so this covers India's biggest 1,244 listed companies, not every listed company. 10 companies are left out: 4 with a placeholder ID (a year that cannot be real), 3 with an ID in the wrong format and 3 no longer active. This is the year the company was registered, not the year the business began: a family trade registered later looks younger, and a rename never changes the year.

Age is a fact about a company, not a view on it.
