The top three states together: 743 of 1,249. Maharashtra alone (446) has more than the next two combined (297). 25 of India's 36 states and union territories have at least one; 11 have none.

This is where a company is registered, read from its official company ID number. It is a legal address, not where the company works or sells: many Delhi-registered companies run from Gurgaon or Noida. The 1,249 are the listed companies that file a yearly sustainability report, which only the largest do.

How it is measured

Each company's official company ID number (Corporate Identity Number, CIN) is taken from its latest yearly sustainability report (BRSR), which only India's largest listed companies file. Characters 7 and 8 of the ID name the government office that registered the company (the Registrar of Companies), which maps to a state; Pune is counted in Maharashtra and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. 1,251 companies have a valid ID; 3 IDs were in the wrong format and 0 companies gave none. Codes not tied to one state were left out: TS (1), BC (1). 1,249 companies are mapped.

A registered office is a legal address, not where a company works or sells: many companies registered in Delhi run from Gurgaon or Noida.
