Most of India's listed companies are still controlled by one owner group. In 2,849 of 4,297 companies (66%), the owner group (promoters) owns more than half the shares.

The owner group ("promoters") is the founders, family or parent company that controls a company, as the company declares it in its quarterly ownership filing. Owning a big share is a fact about ownership, not a verdict on the company.
How it is measured
Each company is counted once, using how much its owner group (promoters) owns, from its quarterly ownership filing (shareholding pattern) for the quarter ended 31 Mar 2026, the latest full quarter we have. The owner group is the founders, family or parent company that controls the company, as the company itself declares them. Slices: three quarters or more means the owner group owns 75% or more; more than half is above 50% and below 75%; half or less is 50% and below, including 33 companies with no owner group. 315 companies whose latest filing is for another quarter are left out.
How much the owner group owns is a fact about ownership, not a view on any company.
