Next: HDFC Bank, 42,30,425. The typical listed company has 12,855 shareholders. 4,581 companies counted.

A shareholder is any person or firm that owns at least one share. Someone who owns two of these companies is counted in both. The count says how many people and firms own a company, not how big, good or cheap it is.

How it is measured

Shareholders are the people and firms that held at least one share of the company on 31 March 2026, as each company reports it in its quarterly ownership filing (shareholding pattern). 4,581 companies filed one for that quarter, the latest one we hold that at least 4,000 companies filed for; each is counted once, from its newest filing. One figure is 5 lakh shareholders and the last figure in each row is cut to its exact fraction, so a row's length is its count; a leftover thinner than 3 pixels (under about 37,000 shareholders) is too thin to see and is not drawn, and the exact count is printed at every row end. A person who owns shares in two companies is counted in both, so these counts cannot be added up to a number of people.

The typical (middle) company has 12,855 shareholders: half have fewer, half have more. Each of the ten counts was checked against the same company's count for the quarter ended 31 December 2025. The number of shareholders says how many people and firms own a company.

It says nothing about how big, good or cheap the company is.
