What the chart shows
How many shares rose this year? 4 in 10. Of 2,600 shares with a closing price at the end of 2025 and on 6 Oct 2026, 1,052 closed higher and 1,548 closed lower.
Share by share (31 Dec 2025 to 6 Oct 2026)
- Rose: 1,052 shares (40.5%), 318 of them by 50% or more
- Fell: 1,548 shares (59.5%), 100 of them by 50% or more
- The typical (middle) share: −7.7%
- Over the same days the Sensex fell 14.3% and the Nifty 50 fell 12.8%. Those indices follow the biggest companies; most shares belong to smaller ones.
Left out and counted: 147 shares that started trading this year, 291 with no price for the last week of 2025 in our records, 14 with a one-day jump of more than 40% (almost always a bonus issue or a company splitting in two), 2 unchanged, and 351 funds that trade like shares.
What this is: each share's own closing price on 6 Oct 2026 against its last close of 2025, adjusted for share splits. What it is not: a forecast or advice. Dividends are not counted.
How it is measured
For every ordinary share with a closing price on 6 Oct 2026, we compare that price with its last closing price of 2025 (in the last week of December). A share that closed higher rose; lower, fell. 2 closed exactly where it ended 2025 and is counted on its own, not drawn. Prices are adjusted for share splits; dividends are not counted.
Set aside and counted: 147 shares that started trading this year through a public offer; 12 whose share code changed this year (a share split gives a new code, so its old prices are not comparable); 277 more with no price at the end of 2025 in our records (companies created by a split-up, shares moved up from the small-company board, and shares our price records only began to cover this year); 2 with no trade in the last week of 2025. A one-day jump of more than 40% either way between the two dates is almost always a bonus issue or a company splitting in two that the price records did not adjust, so those 14 shares are left out. Funds that trade like shares (ETFs, index, gold and silver funds, 351) and special share types (partly paid shares and similar, 6) are not counted.
The rose share is 40.5%; counting the 14 left-out shares as they are gives 40.3%, and a stricter rule that also leaves out any one-day move beyond 22% gives 40.6%. The typical (middle) share moved −7.7%. Whether a share rose this year says nothing about whether it is good, cheap or dear, or where it goes next.
